Course List

Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus

Teaches operatives to locate buried services accurately using cable

avoidance tools (CAT & Genny) and plans before breaking ground.

Covers interpreting signals, safe digging practice and avoiding strikes on gas, electric, water and telecoms apparatus. The essential first step in any safe excavation.

Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Covers the correct setting out of signs, lighting and guarding to protect the workforce and the public around a street works site.

Delegates learn layout requirements, pedestrian and traffic management basics, and the standards set out in the Red Book. A foundation unit for compliant on street working.

Excavation in the Highway

Qualifies operatives to excavate safely and correctly within the public

highway.

Covers breaking out surfaces, supporting excavations, managing arisings, and protecting buried apparatus. Ensures digging work meets the required standards and keeps the site safe.

Reinstatement and Compaction of Backfill Materials

Covers the correct placement and compaction of backfill once apparatus

work is complete.

Delegates learn layer depths, material selection and compaction methods to achieve a durable reinstatement. Reduces the risk of settlement and subsequent defect notices.

Reinstatement of Sub-base and Road Base in Non-Bituminous Materials

Focuses on correctly reinstating the sub-base and road base layers using

non-bituminous materials.

Covers material specification, layer construction and compaction to meet the SROH standard. Builds the structural foundation for a lasting reinstatement.

Reinstatement in Cold-lay Bituminous Materials

Qualifies operatives to reinstate the surface course using cold-lay

bituminous materials.

Covers material handling, laying technique, edge sealing and compaction. Suited to smaller works and situations where hot-lay materials are impractical.

Reinstatement in Hot-lay Bituminous Materials

Covers reinstatement of the surface course using hot-lay bituminous

materials to achieve a permanent finish.

Delegates learn temperature control, laying, jointing and compaction to meet specification. Produces a durable, compliant final surface.

Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways

Qualifies operatives to reinstate modular surfaces such as block paving,

flags and setts, along with concrete footways.

Covers correct bedding, laying pattern, jointing and compaction to restore the surface to specification. Ensures a durable, compliant finish on footways and paved areas, reducing the risk of trips and defect notices.
